SPARK: Suicide Prevention through Awareness, Readiness, and Knowledge

Outside the virtual therapy room, Dennis Steelman is the founder and director of SPARK, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming how rural communities prevent suicide, respond to crisis, and support survivors.

SPARK stands for Suicide Prevention through Awareness, Readiness, and Knowledge, and it serves as a catalyst for hope across East Texas—connecting people, faith communities, and professionals in a shared mission to save lives and reduce stigma.

Why SPARK Matters

Rural areas often face silent struggles—limited access to care, higher suicide rates, and stigma that keeps people suffering in silence. SPARK was born from a belief that we can do more, together. By building coalitions, equipping trusted leaders, and showing up after tragedy, SPARK turns compassion into action.

Whether you're a pastor, teacher, healthcare worker, or simply someone who cares—there’s a place for you in this movement.

Ways to Get Involved

SPARK invites individuals, organizations, and communities to participate in the following initiatives:

  • 🕊 CARES Team
Postvention outreach team supporting families and friends impacted by suicide loss. Volunteers receive training to provide presence, comfort, and guidance during some of life’s darkest moments.

  • 🚓 SHIELD
A dedicated sub-initiative focused on the mental health of first responders. Through training and peer support, SHIELD aims to protect those who protect us.

  • 💡 IGNITE
Combating the intersection of substance use and suicide through community collaboration, education, and integrated care strategies.

  • 🏥 RESUS
Supporting ER and medical professionals facing emotional strain, loss, or burnout with tailored postvention support and wellness outreach.

  • 🤝 SPARK Faith Connect
A monthly virtual call for church leaders across East Texas—offering devotionals, training spotlights, and ministry tools to address suicide in faith-based settings. Held every 3rd Thursday at 3:00 PM CST.
