Common Questions About Starting Therapy
What to Know Before You Begin Your Journey Toward Healing
Reaching out for therapy is one of the most courageous steps a person can take.
Yet for many, it is also one of the most intimidating.
At Empowered Wellness, I often hear from clients who are ready to begin therapy but feel unsure of what to expect — or who worry about whether they will be comfortable in the process.
If you’re wondering about therapy — how it works, what happens in a session, whether it’s right for you — you are not alone.
In this post, I’ll answer some of the most common questions about starting therapy, so you can feel more informed and empowered as you take this important step.
What happens in the first session?
Your first session is about getting to know each other.
I will invite you to share what brings you to therapy and any goals or concerns you have.
We will talk about your history, strengths, and what you hope to gain from the process.
You can ask any questions about therapy itself, and I will explain how I work and what to expect.
There is no pressure to dive into difficult topics right away. We will move at a pace that feels safe and comfortable for you.
How long are therapy sessions?
Most sessions last about 50-55 minutes.
Occasionally, longer sessions (75-90 minutes) may be scheduled if clinically indicated — such as during certain EMDR processing sessions.
Together, we will determine a schedule that fits your needs.
How often will I need to come to therapy?
The frequency of therapy depends on your unique situation and goals.
Many clients begin with weekly sessions to build momentum and establish consistency.
Others may prefer bi-weekly sessions or a different schedule based on their availability and needs.
As you make progress, we may adjust the frequency over time.
How long will therapy last?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer.
Some clients achieve their goals in a short series of sessions (6–12 sessions), while others choose longer-term therapy for deeper work or ongoing support.
We will regularly review your progress and goals together, so that therapy remains aligned with your needs.
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy for addressing trauma, anxiety, and distressing experiences.
It helps the brain process "stuck" memories and emotions, reducing their intensity and helping you move forward.
EMDR uses guided bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds) to activate the brain’s natural healing processes.
I use EMDR when clinically appropriate — always with your full understanding and consent.
It is one of several tools we may incorporate into your therapy journey.
Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?
No — therapy is always paced according to your comfort level.
Some clients choose to share details of traumatic experiences; others prefer a more structured, skills-based approach without deep verbal processing.
Many approaches, including EMDR, allow us to process trauma without revisiting every detail out loud.
You are always in control of what you share.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy and is protected by law, with a few specific exceptions (such as risk of imminent harm or certain legal requirements).
We will review confidentiality and your rights in detail at your first session.
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes — Empowered Wellness is a fully virtual practice.
This allows you to access therapy from anywhere that is safe and private — whether at home, at work, or even while traveling.
Many clients find that virtual therapy is convenient, effective, and helps them integrate therapy into their lives more easily.
Can therapy help with anxiety, perfectionism, or overthinking?
Absolutely.
These are some of the most common concerns I help clients address.
Using approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Disciplined Thinking, and EMDR, we work to quiet the mental chatter, build resilience, and create more space for calm and clarity.
Do you work with faith-based clients?
Yes. Many clients who come to Empowered Wellness wish to integrate their faith and values into the therapy process.
Others prefer a secular approach — and that is welcome too.
This is a space where your unique background and beliefs will be honored and respected.
